    Official Ruling
If the target of any of Deathrite Shaman's three abilities is an illegal target when that ability tries to resolve, it won't resolve and none of its effects will happen. You won't add mana, no opponent will lose life, or you won't gain life, as appropriate.

    Official Ruling
Because the first ability requires a target, it is not a mana ability. It uses the stack and can be responded to.

Deathrite Shaman was banned in modern on February 3, 2015. This ban followed closely on the second Jund-related removal, as Bloodbraid Elf was the first card from Jund to get the axe, but not the last. Source: https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/arcana/brief-history-modern-banned-list-2015-02-03

Deathrite Shaman was banned in legacy on July 2, 2018. Deathrite Shaman decks have been the most played and winning decks, showing a 55% win rate against the field and reducing diversity. The card's powerful mana-fixing and flexible abilities make these decks difficult to attack and hostile to rogue strategies. For these reasons, Deathrite Shaman is banned in Legacy. Deathrite Shaman was banned in modern on February 3, 2014. Different flavors of black-green decks have recently been among the best-performing decks in Modern. Deathrite Shaman is powerful at all stages of the game, and we believe that removing it from the format will leave more room for future innovation.
